LYRICREVIEWS: ‘MAGDALEN ACCEPTS THE INVITATION’, THE LUSH, GENTLE NEW ALBUM FROM MARK OLSON & INGUNN RINGVOLD
BY: MARK ENGLESON ON: JUNE 8, 2020
At their home in Joshua Tree, California, singer-songwriters (and married couple) Mark Olson and Ingunn Ringvold have easy access to some of nature’s most majestic sights. The landscape has inspired many, most famously U2, and that inspiration is in clear evidence on Magdalen Accepts The Invitation.
Magdalen Accepts the Invitation marks Olson’s third collaboration with Ringvold, a Norwegian singer-songwriter, and it’s clear the duo are hitting their stride. Leaning more to the singer-songwriter side than the hard country edge of Americana, the album is filled with gentle, rolling keys and lush, soaring strings.
The pair’s songwriting deftly works in religious allusions, with the title a reference to, quite possibly the lone female disciple. The second track, “You’ll Find The Morning,” mentions “the fisherman of men” – Christ. These references are subtle, and the album is by no means a piece of theology. Rather, it is a subtle, textured that reveals more and more depths with every listen.
Well-arranged and orchestrated, Magdalen Accepts the Invitation is a deep, soothing series of meditations from two very gifted songwriters.
